DepEd to hold teachers' training in October on sports track of K+12

Even under the government's new K to12 education program, sports-oriented students will get the proper guidance on entering sports-related careers.

 

The Department of Education said it will hold a workshop for teachers to guide students through the Special Program on Sports (SPS).

 

"(SPS) seeks to broaden the range of opportunities for students. They would have a choice to pursue a college degree related to sports or enter jobs as community coaches, apprentices, or physical fitness instructors," the DepEd said in a news release posted on the Official Gazette website.

 

The training-workshop will be held on October 22 to 26 at the Teachers Camp in Baguio City.

 

Expected to participate are regional sports supervisors, division sports coordinators, school heads and teachers of 17 SPS lead schools, heads and teachers of schools implementing SPS, and those interested in implementing the SPS program.

 

K to12, which was started this year, adds two years to the 10-year basic elementary and high school curriculum, so students can have skills to find jobs even if they cannot - or choose not to - go to college. But for this school year, only the new curricula of Grade 1 and Grade 7 (formerly first year high school) was phased in.

 

The SPS October workshop will be divided into two concepts: options in the world of work and options in higher education.

 

It will also feature discussions on sports ethics, sports marketing, and sports psychology.

 

“By orienting our students and teachers with the different fields related to the Special Program on Sports, they will be fully equipped with knowledge and processes that can be readily applied to their future careers,” said DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro.

Integrating SPS into K to 12

 

The DepEd said the training includes a lecture that seeks to integrate the SPS curriculum standards into the K-12 program.

 

It said the training will also serve as an avenue for teachers to acquire new competencies in integrating sports in various aspects in school. — ELR, GMA News
