UAAP: Teng shatters rookie record, scores 35 in DLSU's 2OT win over NU

Jeron Teng just set a new record for most points scored by a rookie, dropping 35 big points to carry DLSU past NU in double overtime, 87-86. The Xavier School standout and Bobby Ray Parks combined for 70 points in a game that needed two extra periods to be concluded. The rookie archer grabbed six rebounds and made 14 of 21 attempts from the field. Almond Vosotros chipped in four triples en route to 18 points, while Norbert Torres had six points on a miserable 2 for 14 outing but secured 11 rebounds for the Archers. Teng is only the second Archer in the past 10 years to score at least 30 points, the last one being Joseph Yeo scored 30 in 2003. UP's Paolo Mendoza holds the single game record with his 48-point performance, but it's NU Bulldog Jeff Napa's 43 points set in 2002 that has been the one to beat for the past 10 years. Teng passed Mike Gamboa's 25-point record-setting rookie performance early in the fourth quarter with an and one play for his 26th point.

"Before the game, we told ourselves we could not afford to be left behind (in the standings)," said La Salle head coach Gee Abanilla. "We finally beat one of the seeded teams and hope we can build on this." Abanilla also commended Teng and Vosotros for their performances, and the rest of the team for hanging on through their second overtime game this season. We learned our lesson against UST," said Teng of their last defeat. DLSU is now 1-1 in double overtime games this season. Teng led the Archers to a hot start, slashing to the lane for six points to start the game with an 8-2 run. National University had plenty of opportunities to score, but the Bulldogs struggled to convert in the paint. Parks finally broke down the defense for an and-one play, but Teng responded on the other end with a trey from the left wing, 15-7, at the 4:25 mark. Parks struggled from the line, making 2 of 4 while La Salle found Joshua Webb and Jovet Mendoza for a pair of layups. Almond Vosotros buried a triple with half a minute remaining in the quarter. Jeoff Javillonar finished at the rim at the other end, but LA Revilla beat the clock to drain one from downtown, as the first quarter expired with La Salle enjoying an 11-point advantage, 25-14. The pace picked up in the second quarter as NU found a solution to La Salle's defense. Alolino scored off an offensive rebound while Parks drove to the lane to unleash a 7-0 run for the Bulldogs in the 8:29 mark. The Archers set up Teng for a lob play off an inbounds pass, but Denice Villamor, Mark De Guzman and Gelo Alolino cruise to the basket for layups, knotting the score at 27-all. After Ajeet Singh and Teng exchange shots in the lane, a tip-in by Emmanuel Mbe allowed NU to lead briefly, 31-29. The Archers responded with a 9-4 flurry anchored on two more treys from Vosotros, 38-34. In the last two minutes of the half, the two teams sought their points from the line. NU and La Salle went 3 of 4, and 2 of 4, respectively. La Salle had the ball at the end of the quarter once again, and Teng bailed them out with a spinning move to the basket to give DLSU a 42-37 lead at the half. When play resumed, Villamor sank a three-ball from the corner, and the Bulldogs found Mbe on the break for a wide-open slam. But La Salle countered with a 15-5 run, courtesy of six points inside by Arnold Van Opstal. Parks picked up his fourth foul during the stretch and was forced to sit, as a cutting move to the rim by Jovet Mendoza at 2:23 brought the tally to 57-45. The Bulldogs rallied, 7-2, capped by a corner three by Troy Rosario to keep them within striking distance, 52-59. With Parks in foul trouble and Mbe resting on the bench, Rosario carried the scoring burden for NU. Rosario scored six straight for NU. A putback play by Glenn Khobuntin capped an 8-2 run for the Bulldogs. Four straight from Parks at the 0:47 mark pushed the Bulldogs ahead, briefly, 67-66. With 36 seconds remaining in the game, Yutien Andrada converted on a layup to put DLSU on top yet again. Almond Vosotros had the opportunity to seal the win from the line, but the guard only went 1-of-2 to give NU a chance to tie or win the game. With eight seconds left, the Bulldogs went to Rosario for the buzzer-beating layup to send the game into overtime. Arnold Van Opstal started the first overtime with back to back baskets to put DLSU ahead by four, before a Parks dunk with 3:36 remaining kept it close, 74-71. A three by Teng put the Archers up, 79-75, but Parks scored four straight with less than a minute remaining to tie the game. La Salle had a chance to take the win, but Andrada's baseline jumper rimmed out at the buzzer to force a second overtime. DLSU started the second overtime with its outside sniping, as Vosotros and Teng hit back to back triples to put the Archers ahead, 79-85. Parks got help from Emmanuel Mbe, as the two combined for four to keep the Bulldogs close, 86-83, but a key offensive rebound by Norbert Torres with less than a minute to go gave the Archers the crucial ball possession to waste away the time. With five seconds remaining, Robin Rono was forced to foul Vosotros to stop the clock. Vosotros split from the line, before Parks hit a buzzer-beating three for the final score, 87-86. The Archers did their damage from outside with nine three-pointers, with Teng and Vosotros hitting four each. La Salle also showed better ball movement, especially in the halfcourt set, notching 17 assists to NU's nine. It was a close fight for the Bulldogs, who outrebounded the Archers (61-51) and had more chances at the line, 22 of 33 against La Salle's 14 of 25. Parks tied Teng with 35 points of his own on 10 for 23 field goal shooting. The reigning MVP added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Troy Rosario tallied a double double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Emmanuel Mbe notched 12 points and 12 boards on a 5 for 16 clip from the floor.
