UAAP: Codinera out as Red Warriors coach, Zamar back in
After 21 games, or a season and a round in the UAAP, the University of the East has decided to move Red Warriors coach Jerry Codinera over to a consulting job. In a phone interview with Inboundpass, Codinera said “I’m now a sports consultant of UE,” but failed to elaborate on his sudden career change. Codinera, known as the "Defense Minister" during his stint in the PBA, was a head coach first in the now-defunct PBL with the Teletech Titans, before moving over to an assistant coach position with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons. He was named UE head coach in Season 74, taking over for Lawrence Chongson. In his first season, UE finished with a 3-11 win-loss record, and things didn't appear to be getting better this year, when the Red Warriors started off 1-6, tied with UP and the Adamson University Soaring Falcons for last place. As a collegiate player, Codinera was a key figure in UE reaching titles in Season 47 and 48. He transitioned well to the pros, playing alongside Jojo Lastimosa, Glenn Capacio, Ramon Fernandez, and Alvin Patrimonio on Purefoods, before eventually getting named as one of the league's 25 greatest players. Replacing him on the bench will bey Boysie Zamar, who previously helmed UE during the Paul Artadi and James Yap era, from Seasons 64 to 66. - AMD, GMA News Inboundpass has been covering collegiate basketball for six years.
