First round meeting: The National University Bulldogs began the 75th season of the UAAP with a 90-55 thrashing of the University of the East Red Warriors, last July 14 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. An issue with Emmanuel Mbe's uniform forced the center to sit out the first half, and the on-the-fly change in the starting line-up clearly took a little out of NU, as a buzzer-beating triple by UE's Roi Sumang gave them a a first quarter lead, 13-15. The host school quickly took seized back the momentum at the start of the second period, with four straight triples, two by reigning MVP Bobby Ray Parks, making it 25-17 in their favor. Then as the first half wound down, NU matched UE's feat by hitting a buzzer-beater of their own, making it 48-23 at the break. UE never really threatened from that point on. Key stats: In their first encounter, NU's back-breaking triples (10-of-33 from 3pt land), halted UE in their tracks, but it was their run-and-gun tactics that broke the Red Warriors. The Bulldogs got 28 points off the break and 22 markers off UE's errors. In contrast, UE got no fast break points, and a paltry nine turnover points. National U. played their entire roster, thanks to the one-sided nature of the game, and had four players finish in double-digits. UE conversely, had just Roi Sumang doing nearly all of the work. The sophomore point guard finished with 21 markers, with their next best scorers totaling eight points. UE has struggled on both ends of the floor so far this season. They score the fewest points (58.9) while shooting the worst percentage from the field (32.6 percent), and allow the most points (75.5), allowing 39.9 percent shooting. Needless to say it will be a huge upset if they somehow manage to topple NU, which scores 72.8 points per game, thanks to top-three positions in fastbreak points (12.6), second chance points (10.8) and turnover points (14.6). UE needs to: Play a perfect game, limiting their turnovers and denying their opponent second-chance opportunities. Roi Sumang needs to be superb, but so too will his teammates. The likes of Chris Javier and JR Sumido will need to dominate their counterparts on the other bench. If they're lucky, Bobby Ray Parks' shooting slump will continue over from their game against UST (3/21 FG) and they can stop him from getting to the foul line. NU needs to: Jump out to a huge lead by out-hustling their foes, through fast breaks and turnover points. Once they've gotten that huge lead, they'll need to keep the pressure on and avoid a collapse, which is what has happened against UST and Adamson in the second round. This could be a great opportunity for guys like Mark De Guzman and Henri Betayene to build up their confidence, as they'll need their production against higher-ranked opponents. Projected UE starting five: Roi Sumang (17 points on 5/14 FG, 6/10 FT, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal vs DLSU), Gene Belleza, Chris Javier, Adrian Santos, JR Sumido Projected NU starting five: Bobby Ray Parks (15 points on 3/21 FG, 9/12 FT, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 4 blocks), Troy Rosario, Henri Betayene, Gelo Alolino, Denice Villamor
