The University of the East Red Warriors, emboldened by their championship run in the recently-concluded FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, look to begin the 76th season of the UAAP on a good note, by defeating the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the very first game of the season, Saturday at the MOA Arena.
FEU saw their streak of consecutive Final Four appearances snapped after five seasons last year, losing not just a league-mandated rematch (versus NU), but also the battle for the fourth seed that resulted (versus DLSU). This time around, they'll be raring to return, especially since it will be the last year of eligibility for King Tamaraw RR Garcia.
The Tams though have problems up front, with injuries and graduation robbing them of depth at the center position. Anthony Hargrove and Christian Sentcheu will have to provide defense while staying out of foul trouble, or they'll be forced to go small, with someone like Carl Bryan Cruz.
UE on the other hand will be leaning on point guard Roi Sumang, who now has more weapons at his disposal thanks to the return of Lord Casajeros and JM Noble, plus the addition of center Charles Mammie.
While the Red Warriors have the advantage of depth, they'll still need to make it happen in their mother league, especially after picking up just a single win in the first round last year.
Game starts at 2pm.
