The De La Salle University Green Archers and the National University Bulldogs will try to end the first round above the .500 mark, when these two squads collide on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
DLSU (3-3) avoided falling into a three-game skid when they made 9-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter against the Adamson Falcons, including a 5-of-6 mark by center Norbert Torres. In fact, they shot their best percentage of the season in that game, 18-of-22, impressive given that they were just 53.8 percent at the line in their previous five games.
Archer fans no doubt have to hope that the team can keep it up and become more consistent from the stripe, and similarly, they're also keeping their fingers crossed that the aforementioned Torres (13 points) can continue to attack. Previously, he was averaging a mere 6.8 markers and had taken a backseat to Arnold Van Opstal and Jason Perkins. But given their tight rotation, if they can get more out of their starting center, then this team will perform so much better and increase their bid for a Final Four spot.
NU (3-3) on the other hand, fell to a late Adamson rally, despite a huge outing from Emmanuel Mbe and Bobby Ray Parks, a combined 32-point, 24-rebound effort, to be precise. With the game on the line, the team went to Robin Rono for a triple, but despite making two of his last three, his potential game-winner was offline, putting them at .500 after six games.
While Parks and Mbe are putting up their usual dominant numbers, the supporting cast has yet to coalesce. The aforementioned Rono, their back-up point guard, has given them some long-range scoring, but starter Gelo Alolino has been mediocre in the past two outings scoring-wise. In 46 minutes between their FEU and AdU games, he's provided a total of just six points on 3-of-18 shooting, though he's dished out 10 assists. With NU last in three-point shooting and perimeter points, someone will need to spread the floor to help Parks and Mbe.
Game starts at 4pm.
