The 3-4 De La Salle University Green Archers face off against the also 3-4 Adamson University Soaring Falcons, following a controversial first round encounter, Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Round one encounter
After the hosts Adamson drew first blood, La Salle romped away with the lead, staying out in front throughout the first three periods, and boasting of a 61-44 buffer with 7:47 left in the game.
However, Adamson came surging back, using a 21-4 run that knotted things at 65-all with 1:20 left. Controversy however reared its head, when after Jeron Teng nailed two charities to put the Archers ahead, Gian Abrigo was whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul on Norbert Torres, while the former was trying to deny the inbounds to the 6'6" big man. Torres proceeded to make 3-of-4 free throws, essentially sealing the game.
The final score read 70-67.
Afterwards though, UAAP commissioner Chito Loyzaga wound up suspending the referee that called for the unsportsmanlike foul. The commissioner also concluded that the contact between Abrigo and Torres was incidental, and apologized to the Adamson community.
While the Falcons undoubtedly feel like they were robbed, DLSU is no doubt thankful for the win, their only one in their last four assignments.

Next to FEU, the Green Archers are second-best squad when it comes to getting out on the break (9.6 fast break points), and punishing their foes for making errors (16.0 turnover points). That could factor in heavily against the sloppy Falcons (17.6 turnovers) though Adamson does a good job making sure opponents can't score easily off them (11.7 turnover points allowed, second-best in the UAAP).
The host school's success in this game though could come down to shot selection. Adamson makes literally half of their two-point attempts, thanks to Ingrid Sewa and Rodney Brondial, plus Jericho Cruz's slashing game. However, they're just 26.7 percent from three-point land, good for fifth, and players like Cruz and Roider Cabrera have a tendency to fall in love with the outside shot.
With DLSU's interior defense giving up 34 markers per outing, second-worst in the UAAP, the inside game ought to be a point of emphasis for both squads, whether it's leaning on it heavily, or defending against it. - AMD, GMA News
