The 3-4 defending champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles will try to forge a three-game win streak when they face 0-7 Katipunan-rivals University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Round one encounter

The two sides played back-and-forth ball for much of the first wo periods, with UP snatching the lead via a 7-0 run, 28-27, but Ateneo surged ahead with an 11-0 blast keyed in by Ryan Buenafe, to go up 38-30 at the break.

Ateneo seemingly nailed the knock-out punch after a pair of Frank Golla charities off a Raul Soyud flagrant foul, putting them up 70-54 with 3:43 left. However, a burst of offense by Joseph Marata got UP's deficit down to single-digits, 70-62, with 1:49 remaining, only for Chris Newsome to close this one out via an alley-oop dunk. The final score was 72-64.

With Kiefer Ravena back in the fold and presumably healthier after an extended layoff, the Blue Eagles are expected to be stiffer competition for their opponents, after starting out the season with a 1-4 win-loss card. In their last game of the first round, Ravena finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, and he can only get better moving forward from his ankle injury

UP on the other hand is still searching for their first win with this rebuilding roster. They've lost their seven games by an average margin of 11.3 points, and once again, it's an over-reliance on outside shots that is holding them back. The Maroons took 165 triples, second only to FEU's 190. But where the Tams converted 32.1 percent, UP's only hitting at a 26.1 percent clip, which explains why they're the only team to not crack 100 free throw attempts, and why they're dead last in points in the paint with an average of 26.6 per game.
