It'll be a battle of contrasting streaks as the Adamson Falcons loo to snap a three-game slide, while their foes, the NU Bulldogs, hope to notch a third straight victory, when they collide Sunday at the MOA Arena, in the second round of UAAP Season 76.
Round one encounter
Neither side was able to pull away from the other when these two teams met in round one. Both were incapable of building a double-digit lead, but the Bulldogs thought they had momentum on their side, when back-to-back triples by Jeoffry Javillonar and Robin Roño gave them a 59-55 lead.
Emmanuel Mbe was initially able to match makes by forward Don Trollano, 63-60, halfway in, but NU's offense suddenly fell silent, allowing Adamson to score eight unanswered over a five minute span. National U attempted a belated rally, getting to within two with seconds to go, but Roño was unable to complete the comeback, as his three-pointer mixed at the buzzer, for a 68-66 Falcons win.
Adamson outlook
Teams may start looking at how DLSU defends Adamson center Ingrid Sewa, because the Archers have done a fine job shutting down the imposing behemoth down low.
In their two games versus Adamson, both La Salle wins, Sewa has a grand total of five field goal attempts and just two free throw tries. He's also had a mere 12 rebounds combined, and has gotten four fouls slapped on him in both games.
With Sewa shut down, the Falcons are forced to rely on Rodney Brondial more, and while he's been sensational as of late, he can't be on the floor the entire game. Matched up against Emmanuel Mbe, Sewa needs to stay on the floor if the Falcons are going to win this one.
NU outlook
Entering their game against FEU, the Bulldogs' main weakness was the lack of production by their supporting cast, as Mbe and Parks combined for a whopping 51.6 percent of their team's points.
However, versus the Tamaraws, with Mbe and Parks held to just 17 points, the team got a huge lift from Gelo Alolino and Glenn Khobuntin, who combined for 23 markers. Also import, unheralded guard Will Porter played some nasty defense on Terrence Romeo, helping holding the fiery Tamaraw to just eight points.
While it's likely that Parks and Mbe will bounce back from their quiet game, things will get a lot easier for them if they can get around two other guys to finish in double-figures. With all the attention focused on their dynamic duo, someone like Javillonar or Dennice Villamor could be due for a big game.
