The University of the East Red Warriors will stake their four-win streak against the suddenly stumbling Far Eastern University Tamaraws, when these two teams face-off on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Round one encounter
In the season opener for both these two teams, the duo of RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo put together 41 points, en route to a decisive 89-78 finish, last June 29. UE actually led early by 10, 30-20 in the middle of the second period, but a 16-3 run spanning the middle two periods gave the initiative to the Tams.
Come the final canto, UE got within nine with two minutes and change left, but a 6-0 FEU blast gave the Tams enough of a cushion to dispatch their foes, going up 88-73, with 1:37 remaining in the game.
UE outlook
Prior to NU's win equalizing it yesterday, the Red Warriors' four-game win streak was the longest active win streak in the UAAP, and the Roi Sumang-led unit actually set that up on the back of their defense which has greatly improved as of late. From conceding 77.75 points per game in their first four outings, on 40.96 percent shooting, those two numbers have dropped to 68.75 points and 35.57 percent shooting, huge differences.
One guy who will be raring to make a difference is Charles Mammie, especially after the Sierra Leone native logged just 17 minutes in their round one match-up, due to early foul trouble. If he can flip the tables and get Anthony Hargrove and/or Christian Sentcheu to sit early, UE will dominate the paint, especially versus the undersized power forwards of FEU.
FEU outlook
Things look dim entering this game for sons of Morayta, as one-half of their high-scoring pair, RR Garcia, is suspended after accumulating two unsportsmanlike fouls. Aside from Terrence Romeo, Garcia is the only other Tam to norm double-digit points (13.9), and his absence could open up the door to the former taking many more contested shots as the worst case scenario, or giving his teammates more touches, if we're looking on the bright side.
One guy who could see his numbers bump up as a result of extended playing time would be Mike Tolomia, FEU's third guard, who often gets relegated to small forward while playing along with Garcia and Romeo. Through nine games, he's norming 9.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists, and he's showed in the past that he's more than capable of a big scoring night.
