The Adamson University Falcons broke their six-game losing streak with a 67-53 win over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, in the second round of UAAP Season 76.
With the win, the Falcons climbed to 4-8 while the Maroons stayed winless at 0-10.
Without playmaker Jericho Cruz, who sat out due to fatigue, the Falcons relied on a more balanced attack led by Ingrid Sewa who was rock-solid with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks. Roider Cabrera, Jansen Rios, and Don Trollano backed him up with 17, 16, and 11 points respectively.
“The past few weeks have been really hard for us,” admitted Adamson head coach Leo Austria. “This win gave us a sigh of relief because everyone was starting to doubt us. We want to finish the season with pride. Even though we're out of the tournament, pinaglalaban namin dito yung pride. I’m happy to see we fought back.”
Rodney Brondial failed to score in the game but he was a monster on the boards with 17 caroms.
“I’m really disappointed with this season,” admitted Austria. “We played well in the first round and I was really excited for the second round specially because we had a 15-day break. “
Ingrid Sewa started the game trying to establish his dominance inside. An and-one play from the import at the 8:21 mark of the first gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead, but Joseph Marata quickly replied with a jumper. Julius Wong banked in a one-hander on the next play to give the Maroons a 4-0 lead.
After UP built a three point lead, the Falcons went on a 14-0 run care of Jansen Rios and Roider Cabrera for a 17-6 score in favor of Adamson.
Marata finally broke the Falcons run with an elbow jumper. Raul Soyud and Cabrera then exchanged triples for a 20-11 count in Adamson's favor. Soyud and Jason Ligad combined for the last three points of the first quarter to trim Adamson's lead down to six at 20-14.
Soyud went to work early in the second quarter but he failed to get points as the Adamson bigs ganged up on him. He finally got one to go at the 7:15 mark to cut Adamson's lead down to nine points at 25-16, but he was subbed out right after as he was already huffing and puffing.
A Sewa undergoal stab gave the Falcons a double-digit lead, which was quickly followed by a Don Trollano triple for a 33-19 count in their favor. The Falcons held on and maintained their double-digit lead, 35-24 lead at the half.
Both teams shot under par from the field in the first half. The difference was that the Falcons made three triples against only one for UP. Cabrera and Trollano combined for Adamson’s five triples and they also led their team in scoring with 11 and nine respectively.
Soyud was the lone bright spot for UP in the first half with eight points and nine rebounds.

The Falcons closed out the quarter strong though, as they led 46-38 heading into the final quarter.
A triple from Henry Asilum sliced the Adamson lead down to seven at 52-45 with still more than seven minutes left in the game. However, Cabrera replied with a three-point play at the 5:38 mark to re-establish a 10-point lead for the Falcons. Sewa added a huge one-handed dunk on their next possession for a 57-45 score midway through the final frame.
The Maroons went on a mini-run to give themselves a shot at pulling an upset. A fadeaway jumper from Soyud at the 3:06 mark brought the Adamson lead down to eight points at 59-51. However, Rios scored two straight baskets, followed by an and-one play from Sewa to put the game away for the Falcons.
Adamson dominated the battle of the boards as they got 55 rebounds compared to only 37 for UP.
Soyud had a career game for UP as he tallied 17 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks, two assists, and two steals. However, there were times when it looked like he was the only one fighting back for the Maroons. None of his teammates scored in double digits with Joseph Marata and Kyles Lao scoring only eight points apiece. - RAF, GMA News
