The slumping Far Eastern University Tamaraws (8-4) will endeavor to hang on to their top-two seed in the standings, when they meet up an Adamson University Soaring Falcons team resigned to play spoiler on Saturday, at the MOA Arena.
Round one encounter
Things were tight between these two teams through the first three quarters, but a six-minute field goal drought for the Falcons in the fourth allowed the Tamaraws to pull ahead, 69-63, 2:28 remaining.
Ar-Raouf Julkipli cut that in half, 69-66, 1:54 left, but Terrence Romeo scattered five around a Roider Cabrera trey, for a five-point cushion with 24 ticks on the clock. Jericho Cruz got off a quick make to make it a one-possession game, 20 seconds to go, but they weren't able to punish a critical FEU turnover, as an awkward three-point try by Julkipli missed completely.
What's at stake
A loss by FEU would see them lose their twice-to-beat advantage to the DLSU Green Archers. They'd get to play the winless UP Fighting Maroons in their final assignment of the elimination round, but the chance that the Archers wind up with the incentive at their expense would be too big if they lose this match.
Adamson's already mathematically out of the running, but the host team can make life difficult for FEU and then the UE Red Warriors, both of whom are still in the running right now.
FEU player to watch
With center Anthony Hargrove forced to sit out this game due to suspension, reserve center Christian Sentcheu will need to play heavy minutes. Setting aside a three-minute outing in a loss to Ateneo, two of Sentcheu's last three games have been productive defensively, with 16 rebounds and five blocks total against UE and UST. The more important number though might be his fouls, as he'll need to stay on the floor to battle Adamson's Ingrid Sewa.
ADU player to watch
Ingrid Sewa has been quiet ever since a shoulder injury in round one versus Ateneo, but he had a big outing in his side's losing streak-snapping triumph against the UP Fighting Maroons. With Jericho Cruz sidelined by fatigue and Rodney Brondial missing all nine of his attempts from the field, Sewa led the host team with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, 6-of-8 from the foul line, plus 15 rebounds and three blocks. If he can duplicate that sort of performance, it'll put a lot of pressure on the short-handed FEU frontline, opening things up for the Falcons' shooters.
