UAAP: No forfeitures, but Perasol to serve his suspension versus UST

(Updated 6:43pm)  This time they mean it.

The UAAP board opted not to have teams forfeit any games, instead forcing Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles head coach Bo Perasol to serve out his suspension, following a meeting Thursday, UAAP secretary Malou Isip confirmed to GMA News Online.

"He has to serve out his [earlier] suspension because he was at the game venue," Isip said, clarifying that this wasn't a new suspension.

As a result, Perasol will not be on the sidelines for the defending champions' game against the UST Growling Tigers next Wednesday, which had been rescheduled from August 21 due to heavy rain on that day.

Ateneo will also get to keep their current record, 7-6, while the UE Red Warriors remain out of Final Four contention with a 5-7 card.

Perasol had been suspended for the second round match between the UE Red Warriors and the ADMU Blue Eagles, but he violated UAAP rules for team members by being at the venue, the MOA Arena.

The UE coaching staff pointed this out and asked the UAAP for a clarification of the rules, which was countered by Ateneo asking for a clarification of the rules for suspended players. According to said rule, suspended athletes are not allowed to be "in the vicinity" of their bench.

Ateneo proceeded to list several instances of players violating this rule, including UE's Ralf Olivares, who was seated near the Red Warriors bench in the Ateneo game, while serving out the second of a two-game ban.

Those players named by Ateneo will not receive sanctions, and were instead warned not to repeat their actions.

It was earlier reported that Perasol had permission from Ateneo officials to watch the game, but this point was not given merit. "The board said the rule is there and should be followed. Wala naman kaming authority i-overturn 'yon," said Ateneo board representative Ricky Palou.

Prior to the meeting, speculation about the punishment springing forth from the rules clarifications ranged from a wave of forfeitures to a replay of the game. - Job B. De Leon / AMD, GMA News
