Last year's protagonists in the UAAP Finals now find themselves with just one ticket to the Final Four between the two of them, and so the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and the defending champs Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles will need to win or go home on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Round one encounter

Ateneo jumped out to a 21-6 lead early in the second quarter, but UST was undaunted, slowly getting themselves back in to the game. A barrage from the UST backcourt of Clark Bautista and Ed Daquioag did just the trick, making it a three-point affair, 56-53, 2:57 left in the game.

One more triple by Bautista made it just a two-point difference, 58-54, under a minute left, but UST couldn't complete the comeback, as splits at the line by Chris Newsome and Kiefer Ravena spelled the difference, with a final scoreline of 61-57.

What's at stake

Ateneo and UST are currently tied at 7-6, after both sides lost their previous assignments. A win puts them in the Final Four against the top-seeded NU Bulldogs, while a loss gives them a 7-7 card and a head-start on preparations for next season.

UST outlook

The Growling Tigers got big games from Karim Abdul and Aljon Mariano versus DLSU, but their two other big guns, Jeric Teng and Kevin Ferrer, came up short by comparison. Teng, still coming back from injury, managed just 10 markers on 4-of-16 shooting, while Ferrer, prior to fouling out, scored just five points and missed all five of his three-point attempts.

If those guys find their range versus Ateneo, it will give the Blue Eagles a huge problem, as they'll be torn between staying at home with the shooters, or doubling up on Abdul.

ADMU outlook

Kiefer Ravena simply hasn't been 100 percent this entire season, and an extreme example of this happened in their loss against NU, when "The Phenom" was held to just three points in 24 minutes, prior to fouling out.

Ravena was 1-of-9 from the field, plus 1-of-4 from the foul line, but he did at least add five rebounds and three assists. The first time this season UST and ADMU clashed, he had 13 markers, but needed 15 shots to get there. With their season on the line, Ateneo fans are no doubt hoping he can show off his old form, because if not, it's the end of the line.
