(Updated 5:52pm) “The Point Laureate” Ronnie Magsanoc is set to make his return to coaching college hoops, but it won’t be with his alma mater University of the Philippines. Instead, he will be joining several other Fighting Maroons at the other Katipunan-based squad, the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, a member of the team’s management staff confirmed to GMA News Online.
Coach Magsanoc himself later confirmed the news to GMA News Online, responding to our queries in a text message saying, "That is positive....Will be helping out Coach Bo for this upcoming season."
Magsanoc was most recently head coach of the NCAA’s San Beda College Red Lions, where in his one and only year as head coach, he led the team to an NCAA title back in 2012.
He later stepped down from the position citing personal reasons.
Current Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol and the returning Ricky Dandan, formerly Ateneo’s basketball program head before a stint as Fighting Maroons mentor, are also UP grads.
Last season, Ateneo missed the Final Four with a 7-7 record, after compiling a five-peat under their previous mentor, Norman Black.
Magsanoc also currently serves as an assistant coach with the PBA’s Meralco Bolts. - Job B. De Leon / AMD, GMA News
