Kevin Ferrer nailed back to back treys in the final two and a half minutes to push the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers past the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 69-67, Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Ferrer tallied 18 points with six rebounds, while Karim Abdul and Kent Lao combined for 30 points off a 13 of 21 shooting clip. Big man Abdul also added six boards, while rookie Renzo Subido chipped in six points.
The Tigers held on to a 53-50 lead after three quarters, before Mac Belo and Mike Tolomia mounted a comeback to give their team a 62-59 advantage with three minutes remaining. UST responded with an 8-0 run, started by Karim Abdul and punctuated by back to back treys from Ferrer to put the Tigers on top, 67-62, with 1:57 to go.
The Tams tried to recover quickly with a Russel Escoto triple, but they struggled to score anew. A UST fastbreak attack ended with a Kent Lao basket, as Escoto settled the final score with a last-second hook shot.
Mac Belo led the Tamaraws with 19 points and six rebounds, while Mike Tolomia finished with 14. Russel Escoto and Anthony Hargrove had eight points and five rebounds each. - GMA News
