It's over.
The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons ended their 27-game losing streak by overwhelming the hapless Adamson University Falcons, 77-64, on Saturday at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Mikee Reyes led UP with 28 points, five rebounds and three assists, while JR Gallarza posted 24 points off an 8 of 12 shooting clip. Gallarza added six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Kyles Lao had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Jansen Rios' early outburst gave Adamson a 13-7 run early in the first quarter. Mikee Reyes and JR Gallarza responded with their own 10-0, though, pushing the Maroons ahead, 17-13 after one.
Gallarza extended his scoring streak to 11 points at the start of the seconds, before Adamson strung six together to trim the deficit to four, 23-19. Reyes and Gallarza continued to torch the Falcons from range, enough for a 39-25 edge at the 1:20 mark. Five straight from Don Trollano, followed by a late Ryan Monteclaro trey, eclipsed a Kyles Lao split to end the half, 40-32, still for UP
The Maroons surprised the Falcons with a 12-0 run to open the third period, before Trollano snapped the Adamson slump, 52-34. UP strung more buckets care of Mikee Reyes, as Trollano, Rios and Ivan Villanueva bled for points, 65-44. After three, UP comfortably led, 64-46.
UP looked like they were about to cruise to a win, After Lao and Reyes helped the team put up a 70-51 lead with 6:36 remaining in the game. The Falcons bit back with a 9-0 run, forcing the Diliman-based squad to call for time with three minutes remaining, 70-60. Adamson struggled to connect from deep, though, as another Rios miss ushered in the final two minutes.
A three from Gallarza with 1:41 to go ended Adamson's hopes for a comeback, but a Don Trollano trey off the Adamson press made it a nine-point game with 45 seconds remaining, 73-64. Kyles Lao took care of freethrows at the other end, though, securing the victory.
Don Trollano paced the Falcons with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Jansen Rios added 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. The rest of the squad struggled for just 20 points with a 7 of 31 shooting clip from the field. - GMA News
