UAAP: Kiefer Ravena wreaks havoc with 38 points as Ateneo defeats UE in OT

Kiefer Ravena scored 38 points, including a jumper to send the game into overtime to lead the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles to a 93-91 win against the University of the East Red Warriors on Sunday.

Ravena strung half of his points from the charity stripe where he went 19 of 25. He also had nine assists and six rebounds. Von Pessumal added 19 points with an almost perfect 6 of 7 shooting clip from deep. Chris Newsome had 18 points, nine boards and five assists.

In extra time, the two teams couldn't shake off each other due to shaky freethrow shooting, before Von Pessumal rung in a triple to shove Ateneo ahead, 84-82. Galanza bit back with his own trey, but freethrows from Newsome and five from Ravena kept the Eagles on top, 91-85, with 59 seconds remaining.

Sumang responded with a trey at the other end, before Mammie made it interesting with a slam to make it a one-point game with 14 seconds left. That would be the last UE points, though, as Ravena secured back to back splits to secure the victory.

UE went on an 11-2 run to kick off the first, before Fonzo Gotladera ended Ateneo's slump form the low block. The Eagles Continued to struggle for points in the final 4:20 of the game, stringing four freethrows and a Nico Elorde jumper. Meanwhile, the Warriors continued to lean on Mammie inside to establish a 28-10 lead after one.

A 6-0 run by UE midway through the second made it a 21-point game38-17, before Ateneo started to connect from the perimeter. Ravena and Newsome teamed up in the final three minutes of the game for a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 13, 44-31.

THe Eagles started the second half with renewed vigor, as Ravena went on his own 8-0 run following a G-Boy Babilonia basket, 44-38. But after back to back hits that trimmed the lead to two, Ateneo yielded 12 straight points to UE, capped by twin triples from Roi Sumang and Bong Galanza to establish a double digit lead anew, 58-44. An 11-6 final kick put Ateneo behind by just nine after three, 64-55.

Sumang then tried to take over in the final frame for UE, hitting back to back long bombs for more separation, but Ravena and Newsome would tag team anew, leading the Blue and White to a 12-0 run heading into the final 3:14, 73-70. Baskets from Galanza and Sumang kept UE ahead, 80-75, in the final 47 seconds, but Newsome and Ravena erased the deficit, tying the game with 23 seconds left before denying UE a chance to win the game.

Roi Sumang and Bong Galanza also had career-high outings for UE. Sumang posted 30 points with seven assists and five rebounds while Galanza registered 19 points and five boards. Charles Mammie had 18 points and 13 boards. - JST, GMA News
