(Update) In a rather slow-paced fight, Mexican Edgar Sosa won by majority decision over Fil-American Brian Viloria, becoming the new World Boxing Council light flyweight champion. Sosa came out the more nimble and livelier fighter through most of the 12-round bout. Viloria only managed to sneak in a stunning right cross to the Mexican's face in the fifth round, but the Fil-Am failed to follow up. Sosa had a slight advantage throughout the match, throwing more punches and landing more of them than Viloria, whose face, especially above the eyes, had swollen by the 11th round. The victory brings Sosa's win-loss-draw card to 27-5-0 (with 14 knockouts). Viloria's card now stands at 19-2-0 (with 12 knockouts). The bout had Benjy Esteves Jr. as referre. The judges were Burt Clemens, Max DeLuca, and Jesse Reyes. The match is part of Blaze of Glory which features as main event Manny Pacquiao's defense of his WBC international super flyweight title against Mexican Jorge Solis. Viloria was last defeated on points by Mexican Omar Nino to whom he had earlier lost the WBC light flyweight title. But the WBC disqualified Nino for testing positive for methamphetamine use after their fight on November 18, 2006, thus leaving light flyweight title vacant. Sosa is the current WBC Fecarbox light flyweight champ, with 26-5-0 card (14 KOs). Viloria first won the WBC light flyweight title on September 10, 2005, from Mexican Eric Ortiz. He has a 19-1-1 card (12 KOs). Viloria is ranked no. 3 as a flyweight by the WBA, no. 7 as a flyweight by the IBF, and no. 3 as a junior flyweight by the WBO. Sosa is ranked no. 4 as a junior flyweight by the IBF and no. 12 as a junior flyweight by the WBO. As mandated by the WBC, Sosa will have to face Nino, whom the WBC allowed to be the top contender for the title. âIn light of the fact that the WBC believes that Nino did not voluntarily commit this infraction and considering that his clean record has won him the trust of this organization... we are declaring that Nino will be the challenger for whoever is the new champion," a WBC statement said. - GMANews.TV
