De La Salle University defeated UAAP arch-rival Far Eastern University, 88-83, in overtime Sunday to win the 2007 Nike Summer League title at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Rookie forward James Mangahas, according to league statement Sunday, scored four of his 12 points in the extra period that enabled the Archers to control the game and stop the Tamaraws' rally. Fil-Austrian Rico Maierhofer, who was later named Most Valuable Player (MVP), finished with 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Franz Pumaren-mentored Archers. Cholo Villanueva added 12 points, Tyrone Tang contributed 11 points and Brian Ilad added 10 points for La Salle. Marlon Adolfo paced the Tamaraws with 17 points, followed by JR Cawaling with 14 points, Benedick Fernandez with 13, Mac Baracael with 12 and Mark Baroca with 10. "We're back. More than anything else, this triumph is a good reminder that we're back and we're ready for the coming UAAP season," said Pumaren, who lost to FEU in 2005 UAAP finals. The Archers were suspended in last year's UAAP season. Maierhofer and teammate Tyrone Tang led the Mythical Five, which also include Mac Baracael (FEU), Marcy Arellano (UE) and Neil Pascual (Mapua). In the junior division, reigning NCAA titlist San Sebastian College nipped San Beda College, 80-74, to clinch the crown. Ryan Buenafe led two other players in double figures for the Staglets of coach Raymund Valenzona. Buenafe, voted as MVP, was joined by teammate Bringas in the Mythical Five along with San Beda's Niko Salva, Letran's Kevin Alas and FEU' Anthony Paulino. Salva led the Red Cubs with 20 points, followed by Leeward Lobaton with 17 points and Tomi Babilonia with 10 points.
