Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu edged Dazz 'Sang Patak, 90-89, while Burger King outlasted Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 82-70, at the start of the First Talk 'N' Text Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Invitational Sunday night at the New Cebu City Coliseum. According to a league statement Monday, the Jewelers, under coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba, staged a 10-1 run capped by a three-point play by Jimwell Torion off the final foul of Ronald Bucao at the 53-second mark to put the Michel Lhuillier-owned quintet on top for good at, 87-85. Dazz center Larry Rodriguez then drew a foul from Jayford Rodriguez but could only split his free-throws and keep M. Lhuillier ahead, 86-87, with 39 ticks to go. Woodrow Enriquez gave M. Lhuillier breathing space via two free-throws off Mark Moreno. In the ensuing play, Reed Juntilla missed a hurried triple with Leo Bat-og collaring the defensive rebound plus a foul with seven seconds on the clock. Bat-og split his free-throws for a 90-86 lead. Juntilla sank a triple with a second left to settle the final count. In the second game, Burger King drew superb performances from guard Bong Tan and centers Joe Devance and JR Quinahan against Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr. Tan came off the bench for coach Lawrence Chongson as he teamed up with Quinahan for 14 of the Whoppers' 24 points in the second period to break the game wide open by halftime, 42-29. Tan then clustered five straight points to give the Whoppers their biggest lead of the game early in the third period, 51-32. With MisOr threatening, 67-72, Tan unleashed five more points to restore his side's ten-point margin entering the final two minutes, 77-67. Devance had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Tan shared scoring honors also with 18. Scores: M.
