Mayweather is now WBC Emeritus Champion Superwelter
World Boxing Council (WBC) president Jose Sulaiman has announced that world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is now the organization's Emeritus Champion Superwelter. In the WBC website (www.wbcboxing.com), Sulaiman said the title turns Mayweather into an ambassador of the WBC. The WBC decision was disclosed on July 4, after Mayweather informed the organization that he would keep his welterweight title but relinquish the superwelter weight tiara which he won against Oscar de la Hoya recently. The decision thus leaves the superwelterweight vacant and challengers will be disclosed after the a meeting by the WBC Board of Governors. The WBC considers Mayweather as one of its greatest champions in the last 45 years of the organization's existence. Sulaiman added that Mayweather can be included in a list of elite champions, along with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Oscar de la Hoya. Mayweather, who bagged the superfeatherweight title against Genaro Hernandez, has fought 38 times without a single defeat. For the lightweight title, Mayweather won over Jose Luis Castillo. He added to his collection of titles the superlight weight crown when he triumphed over DeMarcus Corley. He also got a welterweight title by defeating Carlos Baldomir. As if four titles are not enough, Mayweather fought De La Hoya to earn his superwelter weight crown, becoming a champion in five weight divisions. - GMANews.TV
