University of the East started its campaign in the 70th season of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) with an emphatic 73-60 win over defending champion University of Santo Tomas Sunday at the Astrodome in Pasay City. The Warriors fought a see-saw game against the Tigers until late in the fourth quarter when the latter gained control of the match to win their first assignment of the season. Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, took a different route in winning their season-opening game, downing University Falcons in a 69-63 overtime win in the first game. Ford Arao led the Eagles in overcoming the inspired Adamson University Falcons with his 20 points, almost half of which he posted in the extension, and 15 rebounds. The Ateneo center contributed eight of the Eagles' scoring output in a sizzling 10-2 run at the start of the overtime that gave the Katipunan-based squad a 63-55 lead that was enough to ensure their victory. Ateneo and UE are now tied with early leaders De La Salle University and National University, both of which won their season-opening matches Saturday. The Falcons' defeat likewise dented the first UAAP game of their new mentor William Adornado, who is considered as one of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) stars during his heydays. - GMANews.TV
