SEA Games: Eric Cray breaks hurdles record to cop another gold for PHL

Filipino-American Eric Cray copped another gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games as he set a new record for the men's 400-meter hurdles on Wednesday at the National Stadium, Singapore.

Cray clocked in at 49.40 seconds in the final race, breaking the 20-year-old record of Thailand's Chanon Keanchan who finished at 49.76 seconds when his country hosted the Games in 1995.

Cray beat silver medalist Cong Lich Quach of Vietnam and bronze medalist Andrian Andrian of Indonesia, who finished at the 50-second and 51-second mark, respectively.

Prior to the final, Cray had a personal best of 50.00 seconds.

Another Filipino athlete Junrey Bano, meanwhile, finished at sixth place with a time of 53.07 seconds.

A day earlier, Cray bagged the title of fastest man in the region after winning the 100-meter dash.

It is the fourth for the Philippines for athletics, with the other two from sprinter Kayla Richardson in the women's 100-meter dash and Caleb Stuart in hammer throw.

Richardson, meanwhile, settled for the silver medal in the women's 200-meter dash later in the day. She clocked in 23.71 seconds, just behind Singapore's Veronica Pereira who recorded a personal best of 23.60 seconds.

Other silver medalists from athletics were Jesson Ramil Cid for men's decathlon and Mervin Guarte in men's 800-meter run.

Olympian Marestella Torres, who holds the SEAG record for the women's long jump, settled for the bronze after a best leap of 6.41 meters, while Janry Ubas also notched a bronze in men's decathlon.—Marisse Panaligan/JST, GMA News
