UE's Borboran is UAAP Player of the Week
University of the East Warriors' Mark Borboran was chosen by the UAAP (University Athletics Association of the Philippines) Press Corps as its Player of the Week. The media association said that Borboran was selected for the weekly award after he matched his season-high of 16 points and helped the undefeated Red Warriors recover from a poor start against the Ateneo Blue Eagles for a 73-68 victory in the UAAP seniors basketball tournament last weekend. "We played terrible in the first three quarters, but he helped us get back to our real game in the fourth quarter," said coach Dindo Pumaren of Borboran. The 22-year-old Borboran scored eight points in the first six minutes of the final period to turn a 55-59 deficit into a 69-64 lead. Borboran, who hails from Malinao, Albay, also registered five rebounds, one steal and one block in 25 minutes of play. With his clutch performance, the 6-foot-4 standout helped the Red Warriors move closer to tying their best start of 9-0 in the 1986 season. University of Santo Tomas' Khasim Mirza, who won the plum last week, earned another nomination from the scribes covering the UAAP beat. The rookie forward banged in 16 points, including a three-pointer at the height of UST's 12-0 run in the last 1:57 of regulation, for a miraculous 81-73 overtime win against the La Salle Green Archers last Saturday. Borboran, who's averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds this season, is the second Red Warrior after Kelvin Gregorio to win the ANTA-backed citation. - GMANews.TV
