UCAA: Generals beat Blue Lions, 64-60, to advance in Final Four
Nichole Hubalde completed a crucial three-point play as defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) scraped past Las Piñas College (LPC), 64-60, in the 6th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men's basketball at the EAC Sports Center on Sunday. According to a statement from the UCAA, Hubalde, son of legendary Philippine Basketball Association star Freddie Hubalde, drilled in the freebie with 1:28 left off RJ Terez's foul, and the EAC Generals went on to beat the LPC Blue Lions to advance to the Final Four against No. 2 team St. Francis of Assisi College (SFAC). Hubalde's three-point play gave the Generals a slim 62-60 edge. Gester Ebuen, who led the Generals with 12 points, teamed up with Bong Melocoton to bait Sereno Cunial for a foul and then calmly made two charities to seal the win. "That was the play," Generals coach Nomar Isla said. "We knew they will go after our shooters. So I told him (Hubalde) to go for the drive when he gets the ball on the weak side." The Generals will clash with the St. Francis of Assisi College (SFAC) Doves at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in the Final Four round at The Arena in San Juan. The Asian College of Science and Technology (ACSAT) Lightnings will take on the Blue Lions earlier at noon. Hubalde made 10 points while John Valderama added eight for the Generals. Kenny Bullo chipped in 13 for the Blue Lions, while Cunial and Carlos Iroung tossed in 12 apiece. In women's volleyball, defending champion La Salle-Dasmariñas Lady Patriots will face the St. Francis Lady Doves in the finals, both having won over their respective foes in the semifinals held at the EAC Sports Complex. The Lady Patriots stopped ACSAT, 25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 27-25, while the Lady Doves prevailed over Olivarez College, 25-23, 25-19, 25-8, in the women's matches. The Doves became the first team to reach the men's semis round after beating Olivarez College, 25-17, 25-20, 25-20. The Patriots turned back the Generals, 25-22, 25-18, 25-12, to arrange a rubber match at the DLSU-Dasmariñas grounds. - GMANews.TV
