Michael Martinez thanks Winter Olympics supporters
Philippine bet Michael Martinez took to Instagram on Friday to thank his supports who backed him up in his short stint at the men's figure skating tournament at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
"Thank you very much for all the support and prayers!!! I am very proud to represent our country again here at the #pyeongchang2018," Martinez said on his official Instagram account @mz_viral.
Martinez bowed out of the competition after he ranked 28th out of 30 competitors who performed in the short program leg of the tournament at the Gangneung Ice Arena.
Martinez needed to enter the top 24 for him to qualify to the free skating round on Saturday at the same arena.
However, his total score of 55.56 off a flawless performance to the tune of Emerald Tiger by Vanessa Mae only outlasted Felipe Montoya and Yaroslaw Paniot of Spain and Ukraine, respectively.
The 21-year-old Olympian garnered a score of 26.04 for technical elements, 29.52 for unfactored program components, and zero deductions.
Martinez only learned of his entry in the Winter Olympics on January 23 when Swedish skater Alexander Mojorov was dropped from the list of Olympic qualifiers.
Martinez's exit leaves Asa Miller as the last remaining Philippine representative at the winter games. Miller will compete at the men's alpine skiing on Sunday. — MDM, GMA News
