Tigersharks bag nat’l students' cage championship
Benedictine International School dominated Pilgrim Christian College in the fourth quarter to eke out an 83-79 win and clinch the title in the high school division of the 62nd National Students Basketball Championship at the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City. Organizers said in a press statement Sunday that the BIS Tigersharks were able to defend against big man John Paul Erram early in the fourth quarter and tighten the screws on Edward Cielo while outscoring the Green Voyagers 6-3 in the final two minutes to run away with the victory and the champion's trophy. Clark Bautista, who was later named Most Valuable Player of the high school division, led all scorers with 24 points, including five treys, while Edward Daquiaog, who was also named to the Mythical Five, added 22 for the Tigersharks. Cielo still finished with 21 points leading the Green Voyagers, while PJ Siarot had 19. With the win, BIS is assured of a promised trip to Fujian, China, for an exhibition game, along with the winners between seniors finalists University of Visayas and Southwestern University. In the seniorâs side, University of Visayas needed two overtimes to finally subdue University of San Carlos, 100-98, and arrange a championship duel with bitter rival Southwestern University, which outplayed University of Luzon, 98-94. - GMANews.TV
