Rubilen Amit, gold medalist at 2007 Southeast Asian Games, hopes to prove further that women have a spot in the male-dominated billiards. Amit gets the chance to showcase her skill at the San Miguel Beer-Quezon City 9-Ball Championship, which starts on March 17 at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City. She gained the opportunity to compete in the $25,000-even sponsored by San Miguel Beer when she was given an outright spot in the 32-person main draw. "I'm very thankful to the organizers for including me in this tournament, and I promise I will give my best to show that we, women players, can also make it big in the sport if given a chance," Amit said in a statement released by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) on Wednesday. Amit is also preparing for the 2008 World Women's 9-Ball Championship next month in Chinese-Taipei, where she will try to improve her runner-up finish last year. "This SMB-QC 9-Ball is a great venue for me to train for the world championship and I will make the most out of it," Amit said. Amit is one of the 13 seeded players in this year's first major billiards event. The other players seeded to the three-day competition sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB):

  • Former world champions Efren "Bata" Reyes, Alex
  • Pagulayan, and Ronnie Alcano
  • Francisco "Django" Bustamante
  • Current world No.1 Dennis Orcollo
  • 2007 World Pool runner-up Roberto Gomez
  • Reigning national champion Lee Van Corteza
  • Former Asian Games gold medalist Gandy Valle
  • Veteran international players Rodolfo Luat, Warren Kiamco, and Ramil Gallego
  • Top rising star Joven Bustamante
They will be joined by regional qualifiers Aram Serquiano (Northern Luzon), Romar Villones and William Chua (Visayas), and Romeo Timcang (Mindanao), as well as those who will emerge from the three qualifying tournaments starting Thursday at Paeng's Bowling and Billiards Center in Robinson's Galleria in Quezon City. The SMB-QC 9-Ball tilt – which is open to all, including female and foreign players – offers a champion's purse of $10,000. The top four finishers in each of the qualifying tournaments will advance to the main tournament with the remaining wildcard berths to be awarded to the next two highest overall-points earners in the three qualifiers. The entry fee for the qualifying tournament is P300. Interested players can contact Gandy Valle at 0916-958-9897 or Ish Caparas at 0918-967-0572. - GMANews.TV
