SEA Games medalist Amit to prove women power at 9-ball tilt
Rubilen Amit, gold medalist at 2007 Southeast Asian Games, hopes to prove further that women have a spot in the male-dominated billiards. Amit gets the chance to showcase her skill at the San Miguel Beer-Quezon City 9-Ball Championship, which starts on March 17 at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City. She gained the opportunity to compete in the $25,000-even sponsored by San Miguel Beer when she was given an outright spot in the 32-person main draw. "I'm very thankful to the organizers for including me in this tournament, and I promise I will give my best to show that we, women players, can also make it big in the sport if given a chance," Amit said in a statement released by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) on Wednesday. Amit is also preparing for the 2008 World Women's 9-Ball Championship next month in Chinese-Taipei, where she will try to improve her runner-up finish last year. "This SMB-QC 9-Ball is a great venue for me to train for the world championship and I will make the most out of it," Amit said. Amit is one of the 13 seeded players in this year's first major billiards event. The other players seeded to the three-day competition sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB):
- Former world champions Efren "Bata" Reyes, Alex Pagulayan, and Ronnie Alcano
