NCR, Ilocos bag WNCAA, MNCAA caging titles

MANILA, Philippines - Squads from the National Capital Region dominated the 5th WNCAA National Games, while the Ilocos Region reigned in the 2nd MNCAA edition which ended over the weekend at the People's Gym in the San Fernando City, Pampanga. According to a WNCAA statement issued on Monday, the NCR A-Lyceum of the Philippines University defeated the Calabarzon-University of Perpetual Help-Laguna, 55-44, in the one-game finals. Finishing at third place is NCR B-Rizal Technological University, which edged Cordillera Autonomous Region-University of Baguio, 43-42. Lyceum and RTU are the reigning Senior A and Senior B champions, respectively, of the WNCAA, which recently concluded its 38th season. In the MNCAA (Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association) tournament, Ilocos-University of Luzon sent the NCR-La Consolacion College Manila reeling with an 82-74 defeat to pocket the title, while Central Luzon B-Lyceum Olongapo bagged the third sport at the expense of CL A-Centro Escolar University Malolos, 86-79. UPHL point guard Mary Catherine Ruiz was picked as WNCAA Most Valuable Player and was joined in the Mythical Five by off guard Mary Anne Christie Flores of RTU, forwards Joy Ann Mellaine Guerrero of UPHL and Machiko Matsuno of NCR A-Lyceum, and center April Dianne Lualhati, also of NCR A-Lyceum. The MNCAA MVP plum went to UL point guard Marvin Macalalad while the rest of the Mythical Five is composed of offguard Arthur Delito (LCCM), forward Christopher Exciminiano (CL B-Lyceum), power forward Mel Francis Mabigat (LCCM), and center Earvin Lloyd Cruz (CEU). - GMANews.TV
