DAVAO CITY, Philippines - The SK Summer Sportsfest `08, which attracted some 3,500 athletes from 110 barangays in Davao City, will formally close at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Gaisano South (GS) Citimall. Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation Davao City president Halila Sudagar, who guested with her chief-of-staff Richard Algabre at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday, said they have identified promising athletes in the six-sports meet. "We have discovered potentials in chess, taekwondo, badminton and athletics. There are first-timers in chess who even placed better than varsity players," Sudagar said. Algabre said the basketball competition is ongoing at the Almendras Gym while the volleyball tournament is also ongoing at the Rizal Park. "We will evaluate the performance and skills of these outstanding athletes before we make a program for them," Algabre said. The sportsfest was the first major program of the Sudagar who was installed into office on December 10, 2007. Sudagar's sports consultant Darren Evangelista, meanwhile, said they discovered an athlete in 100-meter dash whose time was close to the national record. "We are eyeing him for our next program. This athlete just needs more exposures and competitions to improve his record," Evangelista said. The sportsfest is a joint effort of City Mayor's Office, Office of the City Vice-Mayor, Association of Barangay Captains, Philippine Sports Commission and SK Davao City, among others. - Sun.Star
