Rufo Sanchez headed a Jeffrey Christiaens free kick late in the match to give the Philippines' Global FC a 1-0 win against DPMM Brunei in the first leg of the Singapore Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Sanchez was a late addition to Global, along with U-23 player Mark Hartmann and Paul Mulders.
The win gives Global some security heading to the second leg on July 27, when they battle the same team for a semifinals slot.
On Thursday, another UFL team will play in the quarterfinals, as the Loyola Meralco Sparks face off against Tanjong Pagar United at the Queenstown Stadium for the first leg.
If they dispose of their respective opponents, the two Philippine teams are headed for a clash against each other in the semis, before facing a Singaporean squad in the finals.
In the other bracket, Home United and Hougang United both enjoyed 2-0 wins against Geylang and Balestier Khalsa in the all-Singapore club quarterfinals. - Renee Fopalan, GMA News
