Azkals superstar Phil Younghusband retires from football

After a decorated career playing for the national team, Phil Younghusband has announced his retirement from football on Monday.

The 32-year-old former Azkals team captain made the announcement on his Instagram account, posting a photo of a drawing of himself wearing his number 10 jersey.

"Hanging up my boots! Thank you to my bosses, my coaches, teammates, competitors and all the supporters who have been part of my journey. See you all soon in a new adventure," he wrote in the caption.

Younghusband has been a member of the Azkals since 2006 and was part of the team's miracle run in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup that pushed the sport into mainstream consciousness.

He finished his career as the country’s top goal scorer with 52 goals. He also holds the record in most appearances for the national team with 108 games.

Younghusband was also part of the country’s historic qualification in the AFC Asian Cup in 2018. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/JST, GMA News
