Azkals' Bienve Marañon, Carli de Murga join top Malaysian club

Naturalized Filipino striker Bienve Marañon is set to suit up as reinforcement for top-tier Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta'zim Football Club (JDT), which is seeing action in the prestigious Malaysia Super League.

The Southern Tigers welcomed the Spanish-born booter on Thursday along with former teammate and Philippine national men's football team member Carli de Murga as they eye to extend their eight-year championship streak.

Marañon had previously bid goodbye to United City FC, his longtime club in the Philippine Football League (PFL), which he helped steer to a number of titles the past seasons.

With his new squad, Marañon is tipped to be a big boost to a JDT side, a team that has been a dominant force in the league after having copped the last eight championships.

In the Super Cup, the Southern Tigers have won six of the last seven editions while also ruling the 2017 and 2019 Malaysia FA Cup. Aside from Marañon and de Murga, the team has also tapped seven other imports.

For his part, the 35-year-old Marañon expressed his gratitude for another opportunity to play the sport in front of his supporters.

"Grateful for this opportunity. New challenge, new goals with the tigers. Can’t wait to play in front of our amazing supporters," said Marañon in a Twitter post.
