PFL to open 2022 season with Copa Paulino Alcantara on March 14

The Philippines Football League (PFL) is set to unfurl the 2022 season with the staging of the Copa Paulino Alcantara on 14 March at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona, Cavite.

Compared to just five clubs in the 2021 edition, this year's Copa Paulino Alcantara will feature seven clubs namely Dynamic Herb Cebu, Mendiola FC 1991, Stallion Laguna FC, Maharlika Manila FC, United City FC, Azkals Development Team, and defending champion Kaya FC-Iloilo.

The tournament tipped to run until May before the league formally starts with its competitions.

“Football fans have long been starved of a lengthy football season, and it is high time that we have a proper league season, which will create rivalries and storylines among the participating clubs,” said Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Nonong Araneta.

“The Copa Paulino Alcantara is also the perfect competition for the clubs to get their fitness back in time for the league.”

The seven clubs will battle in a single-round robin format totaling 21 matches. The top four teams in the elimination round will earn their semifinal berth with the losers playing in the battle for third. The winners, meanwhile, will square off in the final match.

Clubs have already started with their buildup with guidance from their respective local government unit regarding the health and safety protocols.

“It is important for our participating clubs to gain enough preparation for the upcoming league and cup competitions,” added PFL Commissioner Coco Torre.

“We look forward to the start of the cup which will reignite the domestic football scene and we also anticipate for the clubs to host their home matches in their respective venues eventually.”
