Filipinas cap off 2022 with 9-0 win in friendly vs Papua New Guinea
The Philippine national women's football team wrapped up 2022 on a high note after a 9-0 win over Papua New Guinea in an international friendly game on Thursday at Western Sydney Wanderers Park in Sydney, Australia.
Quinley Quezada completed a hat-trick, with all her goals coming in the second half, while Katrina Guillou added two goals to steer the Filipinas to a dominant victory against Papua New Guinea, which is two places higher than the Philippines in the world rankings at 51st.
Team captain Tahnai Annis, Sara Eggesvik, and Jessika Cowart also delivered one goal each while defender Maya Alcantara was credited with the other goal in the 56th minute mark.
The latest triumph came after the Filipinas' 5-1 win over the same squad just last Sunday.
"It was a much better performance from the other night,” said coach Alen Stajcic.
"It’s probably the first time this year that we controlled the game from start to finish and really something that we’ve spoken about. It was pleasing to see it happen within the game."
"I'm not really worried about the scoreline, but I’m really worried about the way we play and I thought it was a big improvement not only from last week on our ability to control the ball and control the game.”
The lopsided victory will see the national team take a break before resuming their buildup for the FIFA Women's World Cup next year.
