Filipinas eliminated as AFC Olympic qualifiers third round cast set

Despite a 1-0 victory over Iran earlier in the day, the Philippine national women's football team was eliminated from the AFC Olympic Qualifying Tournament as the cast for the third round was made official following the results of Wednesday's games.

Group winners Australia (Group A), North Korea (Group B), and Japan (Group C) were joined by Group C runner-up Uzbekistan as the final four teams to dispute the two Olympic spots up for grabs in the third round of the qualifiers.

This after Uzbekistan emerged as the best-ranked group runner-up following their 3-0 win over India, which gave them six points in the group, along with a +2 goal difference.

The Filipinas also finished with six points to take second place in Group A, but had a -4 goal difference, due mostly to their 8-0 defeat to Australia in their previous game. Prior to that, they also notched a 4-1 victory over Chinese Taipei.

The Philippines came into the day needing to win their game against Iran but also needed some luck to go their way as far as the results of the other groups' games.

They got the results they needed from Japan's 2-0 win over Vietnam in Group C and the South Korea-China draw in Group B but also needed at least a draw or a win by India against Uzbekistan to advance.

The third round will be played in February of 2024.
