Filipinas fall short against Australia in AFC Women’s Asian Cup opener

The Philippine national women’s football team, the Filipinas, absorbed a 1-0 defeat to host nation Australia to open their campaign in the AFC Women's Asian Cup on Sunday.

Sam Kerr struck early for the Matildas, breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute. Hayley Raso appeared to double the lead in the 29th minute, but the goal was overturned following a VAR review.

Australia continued to press, with attempts from Raso and Mary Fowler denied as the Filipinas held off the Matildas to keep the match within reach.

The Filipinas return to action on Thursday against South Korea.
