Philippines bounces back with 4-1 win over Laos in ASEAN Championship
The Philippine men's national football team bounced back in the ASEAN Championship (Hyundai Cup) with a commanding 4-1 victory over host Laos on Saturday in Vientiane.
Laos struck first, with Damoth Thongkhamsavath finding the back of the net in the seventh minute to give the hosts a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Philippines responded emphatically after the break. John Lucero equalized in the 47th minute before an own goal by Viengxay Sydavong, who inadvertently redirected Cole Mrowka's attempt into the net, put the visitors ahead.
Jarvey Gayoso then converted a penalty in the 60th minute to extend the lead, while Daisuke Sato capped the scoring with a header off a Kenji Nishioka assist.
The victory allowed the Philippines to bounce back from its 4-1 home defeat to Myanmar last Tuesday.
The Philippines improved to 1-1 in Group B and now sits fourth in the standings behind Malaysia (2-0-0), Myanmar (1-1), and Thailand (1-0-0).
The Filipinos will look to build on the win when they take on Thailand on Tuesday.
