China Open: Han Shi of China in the Round of 128

Alex Eala begins her bid for a maiden WTA 1000 title against hometown bet Han Shi of China in the Wuhan Open Round of 64 on Monday night at the Dongfeng Voyah Center Court.

On paper, Eala holds the ranking advantage at No. 19 in the world while Han sits at No. 217 in the latest WTA rankings.

But the 21-year-old Han, who was born just seven days after Eala, enters the match with momentum after coming through the qualifying rounds and should not be taken lightly despite the wide gap in their rankings.

Han reached a career-high ranking of No. 200 in 2025 and has since shown promise. She reached the main draw of the recent China Open, another WTA 1000 event, after winning two qualifying matches. However, her campaign ended in the Round of 128, where she lost to eventual champion and compatriot Zhang Qinwen in three grueling sets that lasted for almost three hours.

Han also made it to the Suzhou Open main draw but absorbed a sweep loss against Renata Zarazua in the opening round.

In the Wuhan Open, Han is having a stellar run after she ousted world No. 37 Peyton Stearns of USA in the first qualifying match before eliminating Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova to clinch a main draw ticket and earn her place opposite Eala.
