Wuhan Open: Diana Shnaider of Russia

Alex Eala will look to keep her Ningbo Open campaign rolling, but standing in her way is Russian powerhouse Diana Shnaider in their second-round showdown set on Wednesday at the Ningbo Tennis Center.

Shnaider holds the edge on paper, having peaked at world No. 11 and currently ranked No. 13. The Russian has also built an impressive resume, capturing five WTA Tour singles titles from 2024 to 2025---credentials that underscore the challenge awaiting the world No. 20 Filipina star as she tries to secure a spot in the Ningbo Open quarterfinals.

Shnaider is no easy foe.

A fellow left-handed player, the 22-year-old Shnaider had a breakthrough year in 2024, where she captured four of her five titles so far. Shnaider ruled the two consecutive WTA250 events in Thailand and Hungary before seizing another two straight crowns by ruling the WTA500 Bad Homburg Open and WTA250 Hong Kong Tennis Open to cap off her fruitful season.

In 2025, Shnaider defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova to win it all in the WTA500 Monterrey Open in Mexico.

Shnaider has yet to add another title to her collection in 2026, but that hardly speaks volumes about her ability.

Known for rocking colored bandanas during a game, Shnaider has been having some deep runs this season, reaching the semifinals of the Roland Garros and the Mubadala DC Open, where Eala stunned several big names to capture her first-ever WTA title.

Shnaider, who played for one season for North Carolina State in the US NCAA before turning professional for good, is the sixth-seeded player in the ongoing Ningbo Open.

But the young star had to dig deep in her first-round match, staging a Set 1 comeback to complete a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva and set up a first-ever clash with Eala.

The winner of this match will face either fourth seed Iva Jovic or Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals.
