CANLUBANG—Expect a duel between defending champion Angelo Que and Asian Tour No. 1 Juvic Pagunsan when the P4.5-million The Country Club Invitational opens Thursday at The Country Club course. Que—the clear favorite in the tournament—is actually gunning for a third straight crown in the 10th staging of the tournament, which honors ICTSI founder Enrique “Don Pocholo” Razon Sr. He will be a marked man since he won in 2010 and 2011. Pagunsan, who won in 2006 and 2008, hopes to foil Que’s title defense bid and remain in the hunt for the P1.4-million top prize. Although he won more than P34-million last year in the Asian Tour, he confessed that he still needs to earn for the family while his body is still strong and healthy. “I rediscovered my passion for the game towards the end of the 2011 Asian Tour season. Now, I am building on it to secure the future of my family,” Pagunsan said. Frankie Miñoza, on a break from his US Senior Tour campaign, teen sensation Miguel Tabuena, Cassius Casas, Antonio Lascuna, Jerome Delariarte and Mars Pucay are the other big names competing. Philippine Ladies Open runner up Princess Superal, Dottie Ardina, Jayvie Agojo, PHL national amateur champion Lovelyn Guioguio, Andrea Unson, Sarah Jane Ababa and Baraquiel will gun for the low amateur medal. Meanwhile, Richard Sinfuego and Robert Trota assembled a net 60 to romp away with the pro-am side event on Wednesday. Sinfuego pocketed P70,000 while Trota came home with an Apple Iphone and Ipad plus a TechnoMarine UF6 Magnum watch. Also, during the pro awards, TCC Invitational organizer Enrique Razon Jr. led the formal launch of the 16-leg Philippine Golf Tour (PGT) season. Tagaytay City’s Splendido Golf Club will host the March leg, to be followed a week later with the Luisita Golf Club leg in Tarlac City. In April, Baguio City’s Camp John Hay will be the venue of the third stop. Wack Wack hosts the season-ender in November. — JVP, GMA News
