Golf: Double bogeys drop Pagunsan to joint 35th at Doral
Juvic Pagunsan of the Philippines got off to a rousing, but stumbled with a pair of double bogeys in two of the last six holes for an even par 72, good for a joint 35th finish at the WGC Cadillac Championship won by England's Justin Rose at the TPC Blue Monster in Doral, Florida, Sunday (Monday, PHL time). The 33-year-old Pagunsan appeared aggressive at the get-go, nailing birdies in the opening two holes. Those two were soon joined by another pair on the sixth and eighth. However, when things seemed to be going his way, he double bogeyed numbers 13 and 18. Overall, the Bacolod native tallied a four-under-par 284, a score worth $60,500 or an estimated P2.57-million. "Juvic gave it his best shot. There's no doubt that he gave his 100 percent effort. He did not only play for himself and sponsors but for the country. He was proud to don the Philippine colors," said his spokesman and manager Bones Floro. In fact, Pagunsan wound up better than some of the big names in the field, including the likes of Phil Mickelson (71-285), Retief Gooseneck (70-286), and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (72-289), who defeated the Filipino at the Barclays Singapore Open last year. Rose had an impressive closing of his own, shooting a final-round 70 to come from three strokes behind for his fourth PGA TOUR victory in the past 20 months. He did exactly what he had to do, plotting his way around the TPC Blue Monster course, intelligently playing the dangerous par-4 18th for a bogey 5, which was all he needed to win the $1.4-million prize. Overnight leader Bubba Watson of the US struggled to a 74 for 273 while World No. 1 Rory McIlroy made a 67 for 274. – AMD, GMA News
