Olympics: PHL bet Diaz suffers heartbreaking loss in weightlifting

The Philippines' Hidilyn Diaz posted a high of 97 kgs in the snatch event, before failing to get a successful attempt in the clean & jerk, dropping out of the women's 58kg weightlifting category at the London Olympic games. Diaz' 97 kgs was the second highest weight cleared in the snatch event, only behind the 103 kg effort of Maria Alexandra Escobar Guerrero of Ecuador. The weight cleared in the snatch event would have been added to the clean & jerk event had Diaz gone through. The Filipina had three chances to clear 118 kgs. In the first two attempts, she was able to go through the "clean" by successfully placing the weights on her shoulders, but twice she failed to get a clean jerk, or in other words, failing to lift the weights above her. In her final attempt, Diaz failed to go through the clean, as the weights slipped and fell to the floor. A tearful Diaz waved to the large crowd who was around to cheer her on. She walked into the arms of her coach who was waiting in the sidelines, putting a towel over her head as she wept. Diaz' disqualification is a painful blow to the Philippine campaign in London, as the 21-year-old Zamboanga native became the second to fail to register a medal, after swimmer Jessie Lacuna. - AMD, GMA News
