It took five sets, but the Cagayan Valley Rising Suns managed to sweep the elimination round of the Shakey's V-League Season 10 Open Conference, via a 22-25 29-27 25-13 20-25 15-9 epic against the PNP, Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Rising Suns notched victories against all seven of their opponents, to top the elimination round at 7-0. PNP meanwhile gave a valiant effort, but ultimately sank to 0-4.
The PNP seemed primed for an upset, stealing the first set by a 25-22 score, but Cagayan fought back for a 2-1 lead, snatching the second and third. PNP managed to knot things with a 25-20 score, but the decider flew by in just 12 minutes, with a 15-9 edge for the Rising Suns.
Aizo Maizo led a balanced Cagayan Valley attack with 19 markers, 15 off spikes, while team captain Maria Angeli Tabaquero and Wenneth Eulalio added 16 points apiece. Eulalio got four of her points off blocks and two via serves.
Kannika Thipachot alternated with Analyn Benito, and the duo each scored 12.
For the PNP, Janine Marciano led all scorers with 24 points, thanks to 19 spikes, three blocks and two serves. Sangmuang Patcharee added 21 more, but their only other double-digit scorer was Frances Molina with 16. The rest of their side though combined for only 11 points. - AMD, GMA News
