PHL duo of Corteza, Orcollo nab 2013 World Cup of Pool title

Lee Van Corteza and Dennis Orcollo carried the Philippine flag to victory in the 2013 World Cup of Pool at York Hall in London, England.

The duo bested the Dutch tandem of Neils Feijen and Nick Van den Berg to take home the $60,000 prize.

In the finals, the Philippines found themselves down 8-7 against the Dutch. With only two balls between Holland and a 9-7 lead, Neils Feijen failed to pocket the eight ball in the corner, as Orcullo and Corteza canned the last two, respectively, to knot it up at 8-all.

With the winner breaks format, the Philippines never let go, securing the title the country last held in 2009.

Seeded sixth in the competition, the Philippines took care of Croatian foes Karlo Dalmatin and Ivica Putnik, 7-4, before putting away Singaporeans Aloysius Yapp and Chan Keng Kwang 7-3 in the final sixteen.

In the quarterfinals, Corteza and Orcollo barreled through Mikos Balazs and Gabor Solymosi of Hungary, 9-1, to reach the semifinals.

The Philippines faced Chinese Taipei duo Chang Jung-lin and Ko Pin-yi in the final four.

The last time the Philippines won the title was when Efren "Bata" Reyes and Django Bustamante defeated Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann, 11-9, in 2009.

Orcollo and Roberto Gomez came close in 2010 with a second place finish, bowing to eventual winners Li He-wen and Fu Jian-bo of China. - AMD, GMA News
