Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin carried the Philippine flag, albeit upside down, with the red over the blue, prior to their win Sunday (Monday, PHL time) against the
Minnesota Vikings.

The gesture was made to raise awareness for the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan).

Baldwin, who last week told Seattle Times sports reporter Bob Condotta that he has multiple relatives living in Tacloban, also urged fans who watched the game to make donations to Red Cross, adding that the team’s owner, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, will be matching the total amount of donations made.

The Seahawks also tweeted out an explanation for why the flag was upside down, signifying that the country was at war, saying, “We are fighting the devastation of #haiyan which has been worse than many war-torn regions of the world.”

“It was [stressful] at first just because you didn’t know what was going to happen,” Baldwin told Condotta in an interview. “Most of them have been accounted for. One of my family member’s house is completely gone and the majority of my family members are staying in my grandmother’s sister’s house. The only thing is that it’s been difficult to get them food and water because it’s not been accessible to do so. But most of them we have heard from and they are doing okay.”

Baldwin had two catches for a total of 63 yards, one of them being for a touchdown in the second quarter, which made it 24-13 in favor of the Seahawks. - AMD, GMA News
