Princess Superal landed the Philippines two gold medals, in the individual and team categories.
The lady who almost missed participation delivered a gratifying gold medal at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Princess Superal, a stalwart of the ICTSI golf program, won the prized medal with a six-under-par 210 total after rounds of 72-66-72.
“It was so surreal. I was nervous and excited in the final round,” said Superal, who woke up early before the final round started.
The 16-year-old Superal defeated Myanmar bet Yin May Myo by six strokes at the Royal Myanmar Golf Course.
With the gold, she succeeds Filipina-Japanese Chihiro Ikeda, who triumphed in the 2009 Laos SEA Games.
Superal and teammates were not on the initial delegation list as approved by sports officials, who thought they were not gold-potentials.
But they reversed their earlier decision and the trio of Superal, Miya Legaspi and Kat Briones was organized at the last minute.
Despite that, the trio made it a double celebration when it captured the team gold medal as well, after a three-round 428 total.
Superal made 72 and Legaspi added 73 for a combined 145, enough to make it an 11-shot win over Myanmar. Briones’ 77 did not count. - AMD, GMA News
