La Union to host first Asian Surfing Championship contest in the PHL

Through the Asian Surfing Championship (ASC) group, several foreign-based surfers are expected to fly in to participate in the first international surfing competition to be held in the Philippines, with countries such as Australia, Japan, and Indonesia set to be represented.

The competition will be held from February 21 to 22 at the Urbiztondo beach in San Juan, La Union.

Buji Libarnes and Luke Landrigan, two of the best male surfers, in the Philippines will attempt to top the event by leveraging on their home soil advantage. Landrigan lives and surfs in La Union.

Lorraine Lapus, who teaches surfing in Bali, is expected to fly back home to team up with Nikki de la Paz and lead the charge in the female category.  Both ladies have dominated the local surfing scene for the past few years and are expected give the foreign competitors a run for their money.

At stake is P200,000, on top of having the distinction of winning the first ever international surfing competition in the country.

The competitions called Beach Break - Single and Unattached will be the first event hosted by Viva Sports Management Inc. (VSM). It will also have a Frisbee tournament organized by the Philippine Ultimate Association and a beach volleyball tournament featuring popular VSM talents Mitch Datuin, Charo Soriano, Mel Gohing, and Angge Tabaquero.

"These properties are meant to increase awareness and invite participation to the sport of surfing, volleyball, and beach volleyball," said VSM President Mike Ochosa. "We have also prepared them in such a way that it becomes a total entertainment experience." - AMD, GMA News
