The Philippine Davis Cup team won two straight before losing the last three matches to end their campaign to qualify for the 2014 Davis Cup Group II Asia/Oceania final, Sunday at the Philippine Columbian Association tennis court in Manila.

The home team won the first two singles matches on Friday, as PJ Tierro defeated Ageel Khan, 7-5 6-4 6-4, while Ruben Gonzales outlasted Samir Iftikhar, 6-4 6-3 6-1.

On Saturday, Gonzales partnered up with doubles veteran Treat Huey, but they were defeated by Khan and Aisam Qureshi, 7-5 6-3 6-2.

The Philippines still held on to a 2-1 lead heading into Sunday, but Johnny Arcilla was not able to finish the third singles match, yielding to Khan, 4-6 6-1 2-6 6-3 5-1. Much pressure was put on Tierro against Qureshi, but unfortunately, the Filipino bowed out, with his opponent finishing with a score of 6-2 6-3 3-6 6-4.

With the win, Pakistan will face Thailand in the finals in September with the winner getting promoted to Group I play. - AMD, GMA News
